NYC March 2010

my most favorite city in the world is New York City. Granted, I’ve only been to a handful of places, but whenever I travel, NYC seems to remain at the top of my list. I seem to keep adding more and more things I like about NY each trip, and this one was no exception.

My preferred method of travel to nyc is via bolt bus. It has a convenient pickup location (H and 12th St NW) and drop off location (7th Ave and 33rd st). It is a convenient drop off location becuase at around 26th st is BRGR – the perfect spot for a post bus ride burger and shake.

my favorite burger is the one with blue cheese (rocquefort) and bacon. There’s something about blue cheese and beef I love! But the shining star in the BRGR lineup is their strawberry milkshake from Ronnybrook Farm dairy. It is super tasty and creamy and definitely worth a try.

If you’re in central park, around 79th St, go visit the belvedere castle. it overlooks a outdoor performance stage, baseball fields, and a pond. it has a great view of the buildings that border central park as well.

if you find yourself in the chelsea area, around 20th St and 7th Ave, stop in at the Cafe Grumpys for the best cup of coffee I’ve ever had. their coffee is super smooth, without an ounce of bitterness. it just tastes like good roasted coffee. and – they make cool coffee art!

To go along with your Grumpy’s coffee, get yourself over to the nearby (ish) City Bakery for one of their pretzel croissants. Unfortunately the picture isn’t that great because I was walking while trying to take it – if I took it out of the bag, I would have eaten it and forgotten about the picture altogether.

a great spot for espresso that is very rich and strong and roasty is Ninth Street Espresso located within chelsea market. If you want espresso, they serve it to you in a ceramic espresso cup with demitasse spoon for you to drink at the bar.

The piece de resistance for this trip was the new (for me) ramen joint of Rai Rai Ken. This restaurant features seating for about 15-16 people at once. No reservations, and a very simple menu. I came for the ramen and got to have their gyoza and shio ramen. I really liked this ramen as it had a really great texture and had a generous portion.

I would not say it was my favorite though. The salt-egg from Ramen Setagaya on Union Sq south is a real winner. Another place I like is Ippudo because of their berkshire pork buns – delicious!

Here is a list of other cool stuff I like in nyc:
Fish’s Eddy (cool cheap dishwares)
Katsu-hama (pork katsu anyone?)
Rice to Riches (rice pudding)
B&H Photo/Video (greatest photography store ever)
Crumpler Store (quality bags and photo bags)
NY Cake and Bake (every baking supply you could need)
Soba-ya (japanese)
Grom (gelato)
Uniqlo (awesome clothes)
Muji Store (unique house items)

If you come on a warm day, you should try the burgers and shakes at the Shake Shack. I recommend the Portabello burger. It’s totally worth the wait.

Oh, and maybe next time you’re in my city, you’ll look up your old pal Michelle. 🙂
