My Intro to Photography

I would not categorize myself as a photographer yet. I still have a lot to learn before I think I would be comfortable saying “I’m a photographer”. I didn’t get my first digital point and shoot until maybe 2004(?), my Pentax Optio S – a little waterproof digital camera that I took everywhere. I ended up losing that camera in a cab (suxor) and got a replacement off ebay. A couple years later, my cousins gave me the Optio WS (upgraded model) for christmas and I’ve been using that as my point-and-shoot since.

I picked up photography more seriously after getting my first DSLR two years ago – a Canon Rebel XTi from craigslist. I had the kit lens, but it definitely was not satisfactory. What I consider my first lens was actually the Canon 100mm Macro f/2.8, quickly followed by the  Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 super wide then the Canon 50mm f/1.4 USM; prime lens. I have a fisheye adapter by Opteka which is a lot of fun, but it definitely could use a little improvement on clarity. I haven’t quite gotten up to getting a zoom walk-around, but I have my eyes on the Canon L 24-105mm f/4  – gotta start saving soon!

Because the kind of photography that interests me is food photography and urban/journalistic photography, I mostly shoot candids when I’m out and about. I also really like food photography, I’ve got a simple continuous light at home with diffuser to photograph at home, then several camera bags to fit the kind of scenario I’ll be shooting in. The majority of the time, I use my Crumpler 6 Million Dollar Home to carry my camera and an extra lens (or two) and flash. For larger hauls, the Bucket insert for my Crumpler Complete Seed Bag fits just about everything I’ll need. At the end of the last snowboarding season, I picked up the Rome Insurgent Pack which has a crushproof/water resistant padded case in it that should be good to travel with in the winter.

I’ll begin to post and highlight photos I’ve taken that I really liked, and also share the comments and things from Artomatic 2009 as well. I’m doing my first wedding in the coming weeks, so that will be an experience to say the least!

Please check out My Flickr to see more of my shared photos. I’m still working on the “Flickr Gallery” function on this blog to get it working right.
