It may seem unusual to put a wedding photo as my picture of the year, but this photo has so much below the surface which is what makes it an important one for me. The photo is of my cousin who got married New Year’s Day 2011. They had one photographer for the day and he asked me to take photos of the groomsmen and other “guy” pictures. I definitely wanted to help out so we went around the hotel taking photos at various locations, and ending up with some photos I really like. It was a great feeling to be able to give someone a set of photos they like that they otherwise might not have been able to get – one of the big reasons why I got into wedding photography in the first place.
The background of this trip was that it was my first time visiting Taiwan. My parents were born there, but I haven’t had the opportunity to go visit. I was able to see my mom’s family house and meet cousins I’ve never met before. I met my uncle on my dad’s side who has a strikingly similar appearance to my dad. I was finally able to experience the Shilin night market, which was absolutely amazing. It was pretty overwhelming to think that I was sleeping in the same room my mom and aunt spent their days as children. my trip to Taiwan was a surreal experience, see both the “old world” ways and the modern lifestyles interact was intriguing. I would love to go back as soon as I can.
Aside from representing a monumental trip, this photo is also a reminder of of the weddings I was able to photograph this year. It has been a great year, and by the looks of it, next year will be pretty busy as well. I would like to work more with professionals and see how they work to see how I can improve my own photography skills. Although portraiture is still one of my weaker skills, I’m working on it, and want to get more comfortable posing people.
