If you haven’t been, the Udvar Hazy Air and Space Museum is easily one of the best museums in the DC area. Although it is about 45 minutes outside of DC, it is well worth the drive. It has some iconic aircraft dating back to a replica of the Wright Brothers’ original airplane. Some of the highlights are:
The space shuttle Enterprise
The Air France supersonic passenger Concorde that is no longer in use
The Enola Gay, the super-fortress that dropped the atomic bomb to end World War II
An F-14 Tomcat fighter jet credited with shooting down a Russion MiG
and last but not least, their prize possession, the SR-71 Skunkworks supersonic spyplane
This collection has many more planes, helicopters, some flight simulators, and even an observation tower plugged into Dulles International Airport so you can observe like you’re actually there. After 4pm, there is free parking, otherwise you have to pay per car – so cram a car full of friends and visit!
