one thing that has annoyed me a lot recently is people in relatively professional jobs that wear shorts to work. granted, we have had a couple 100+F days, which I would have paid money to be able to wear shorts – but I feel like certain jobs cannot be taken as seriously if the employee is wearing shorts.
Example 1: the IT guy at work that fails super hard at being a “professional”. His email signature includes “IT Specialist Extreme!!!!!!” and “Party on!”. Every so often (not even on fridays, when I could at least understand some extra “casual-ness”) he comes into work wearing shorts. so on top of a non-professional email and work ethic – he seems like he’s already checked into the “govvie for life” suite at the “Fed Hotel”. although he gets the work done eventually (average ticket resolution is 42 days), I still can’t take him seriously because I can’t help think what fat 12 year old he stole those short from.
Example 2: Rent-a-Cops. No one takes you seriously to begin with. Add to it ridiculous “uniform” shorts to accent your chicken legs and now I’m going to be conflicted when you tell me to stop doing something – a part of me wants to make a comment like “absolutely, sir, I’ll stop ____. but do you think you can cover up your legs? they’re scaring the children”.
There are plenty of jobs which shorts is not only accetable but necessary, which I don’t mind at all:
– professional athletes
– anyone who has a summer job under the age of 18
– people who work at amusement parks
– the UPS/FedEx delivery people
– national park rangers/tour guides
Please don’t wear shorts to work if you’re going to be in some sort of position of authority unless everyone else in your industry does so. Thanks.
