9-11 Pentagon Memorial Visit

For a while I have been wanting to visit the September 11th Pentagon Memorial, it opened to the public is 2008. The first time I tried to go, I couldn’t figure out where to park my car. Clearly I didn’t read the visitor’s website that specifies the parking lot to park in and where to walk. you can read more about it from the wikipedia entry.

First impression of the memorial is how peaceful it is. Although there is a major highway right nearby, I didn’t notice it while visiting. The design of the memorial has all visitors come through the main entrance that has a blacked out security booth that presumably has pentagon police monitoring for any vandals. The 184 lives are memorialized by benches and trees that face the Pentagon’s south wall (for the victims on the plane) or away from the wall (for the victims on the ground). The benches are designed to look like a part of an aircraft, with a lit pool of water underneath each one. They are arranged based on the year of each victim’s birth, the most heartbreaking being the first one you encounter of the 3 year-old on the plane.

Between the trees, benches, pools, lighting, and gravel, it is one of the most beautiful memorials we have in DC, even though it’s technically in Arlington. It’s worth a visit, and read up on the visitor’s information before going so you know where to go.
