Review: Dinosaur Barbecue

when you walk through the front doors, you know you’re in a barbecue place. the entire place smells like delicious woodsmoke. so before I start, there is a difference between barbecue and grilling. Barbecue is typically thought of as the “low and slow” cooking that usually involves larger cuts of meat like ribs, pork shoulder, mutton, chickens, and suckling pig. Grilling is more the quick high heat cooking that you use for steaks, chicken legs, kabobs, etc. I’m not going to get into the many many styles of barbecue because I’m not that versed in it, but using “barbecue” and “grill” correctly is one of my little peeves.

Dinosaur Barbecue is a Syracuse-based barbecue joint that only has 4 locations in New York. They have one in New York City, located at 125th and 12th Ave, which is where I went with my friends last week. They serve the whole gambit of barbecue deliciousness: pork, ribs, brisket, everything you can imagine. I appreciate a good menu, especially one that helps diners choose their portion size:

Because it was my first time there, I wanted a bit of everything – they have a platter called the Tres Hombres that comes with 2 sides. it has a few slices of their super tender brisket, 4 giant sized ribs, and a pile of pulled pork – just what I wanted to feed my barbecue cravings.

In a word, Dinosaur Barbecue is smokey-delicious-awesome! this is the kind of place I need to find in DC. although it’s kind of a pain to get to, it is worth the trip. I would say try the tres hombres for a good sampling, but if I was going to go again, I would just get a giant plate of brisket and go to town.
