2011 New Year Resolution

Well, we are three weeks into the new year and I have finally settled on the resolution for this year. in previous years, the all-encompassing “be better” resolution was enough to satisfy curious friends. now, this isn’t to say I can’t get any better, trust me, there is plenty of room for improvement. this year, I wanted something more specific. something challenging. something fun that I’ve wanted to do for a while.

I’m going to learn to play the guitar.

I think I started wanting to learn how to play when my friend Laz was learning while in school. I was already in an a cappella group at the time so I think I felt I already fulfilled my musical urges. After school, the closest I would come to being musical is watching those american idol compilations of the worst applicants on youtube. Well, bad TV wouldn’t suffice anymore. I kept an eye out on beginner guitars and purchased a pretty Fender CD-60 acoustic. I was committed. There is no going back (without a huge hassle of shipping a guitar).

The game plan is this: my friend laurel can give me pointers as she has been playing for ages. I am going to use online resources for pretty much the rest of my “lessons”. I will be practicing as often as possible, and documenting my progress on this blog.

My goal is to learn to play the guitar reasonably well, which means learning all the basic chords and reading guitar tabs and keeping rhythm. I would like to get the point of singing along, but that seems so far-fetched right now I’ll just be happy to get my chord progressions down.

I think you have a great plan for the year. If you are going to play guitar you need a strong motivation and patience. However, the most important thing is to start.
Let me give you a piece of advice (since I am playing guitar for almost 12 years) – find a very good teacher anyway. That is extremely important, believe me. Sure, you can get some basics on your on, but a teacher is essential in case you want a huge progress. Remember that!
By the way you can find out some useful infromation (I hope) about your fender cd 60 on this website: http://www.fendercd60.com.
    Good luck!:-)
